Oral history interviews with Senate presidents and minority leaders were conducted in 2017 to document the perspectives and legacy of each Senate President and Minority Leader once an individual had transitioned out of the leadership role. Individuals interviewed: William Bulger, Senate president from 1978-1996, Thomas Birmingham, Senate president from 1996-2003, David Locke, Senate minority leader from 1989-1993, Robert Travaglini and Brian Lees (interviewed together), Senate president from 2003-2007 and Senate minority Leader from 1993-2007, respectively, Therese Murray, Senate president from 2007-2015, Richard Tisei, Senate minority leader from 2007-2011.Former Senate President Stanley Rosenberg established the project and partnered with the Massachusetts Archives and the Secretary of the Commonwealth's Graphic Communications Division to record, preserve, and make accessible the interviews. Robert Allison, PhD, Professor of History at Suffolk University, served as interviewer. Topics include: the Massachusetts Senate, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, legislation, elections, changes to internal procedures and rules governing the state legislature, legislative committees, constitutional conventions, education reform, welfare reform, redistricting, desegregation of Boston public schools during the 1970s and 1980s, the Great Recession of 2008, legalization of same-sex marriage, and other Massachusetts social, political, and economic issues from 1978 to 2015.
