Folk Artists of Massachusetts: Celebrating Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The month of May is Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month! In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, roughly half a million residents identify as either Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. Reflective of this population, communities across the state have organized cultural events highlighting food, music, and dance, such as the August Moon Festival, the Philippine Independence Day Festival, the Cambodian American Literary Arts Festival, and the Shadaj Music Festival. These events are brought to life by dancers, singers, cooks, writers, artists, and other individuals of the AANHPI diaspora, thus keeping alive the skills and practices taught to them by their predecessors. In 1999, the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) established its Folk Arts and Heritage Program, the successor to its Folklife and Ethnic Arts Program. Its purpose “is to identify craftspeople, performers and cultural specialists, help sustain the practice of tradition where they live, and increase appreciation of their artistry within the community and beyond.” The aforementioned craftspeople, performers, and cultural specialists are integral to the creation and sustenance of culture within and beyond ethnic and social groups. In diasporic groups, these are the individuals that help to maintain skills and practices in a new environment, either by taking on apprentices, organizing public events in celebration of a tradition, or by allowing for their craft or practice to be documented. From ethnographic material found within our collections, this exhibit includes a highlight of Asian and Asian American folk artists photographed between 2015–2023 who have connected with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
